What are backend search terms on Amazon?
Definition
A hidden keyword field in Seller Central that Amazon uses for search indexing. Shoppers never see it.
Backend search terms are keywords you add to a listing in Seller Central that shoppers never see. Amazon uses them to index the product, so it can appear for searches that don't fit naturally into the title or bullets. In the listing editor the field is called "Search Terms", and in templates it's sometimes "generic keywords".
The field is set per SKU. If several sellers offer the same ASIN, Amazon may combine contributions, but your field is your best chance to add words the visible content lacks.
Rules for backend search terms
Amazon publishes guidelines for the field. The main ones:
- Keep it under 250 bytes on Amazon.com. If the field is over the limit, it may not be indexed at all. Some marketplaces use different limits.
- Bytes are not characters. Letters with accents and non-Latin characters take two or more bytes each.
- Separate words with spaces. Commas and other punctuation are not needed.
- Don't repeat words that are already in the title or bullets. Repetition adds nothing.
- Don't include brand names (yours or others'), ASINs, temporary claims like "new" or "on sale", or offensive terms.
What to put in the field
Use synonyms, alternate spellings, common misspellings, abbreviations, and terms for uses or audiences that don't fit the title. On Amazon.com, Spanish terms can help reach Spanish-speaking shoppers. Singular and plural forms usually don't need to be listed separately.
How to check that terms work
Backend terms only help if the product becomes indexed for them. After an update, wait a day and check the important phrases in search. A rank tracker makes this repeatable: add the phrases from the field and see whether the product starts to appear for them.
How AMZTarget helps
AMZTarget Reverse ASIN builds a keyword list from a listing's visible copy and Amazon search suggestions, with volume for each phrase. That's a good source of candidates for the field. It doesn't read anyone's backend terms, because they are private. After you update the field, send the phrases to rank tracking to confirm they're indexed.
FAQ
Can I see a competitor's backend search terms?
No. They're hidden from shoppers and other sellers. Tools can only guess which hidden words a listing is indexed for.
What happens if I exceed 250 bytes?
Amazon may ignore the whole field. Count bytes rather than characters, especially when you use non-English words.
Should I put competitor brand names in search terms?
No. Amazon's guidelines forbid other brands' names in the field, and using them can get your listing flagged.
