What is keyword indexing on Amazon?

Definition

A product is indexed for a keyword when Amazon search can return it for that phrase. Without indexing, a product can't rank for the keyword at all.

Keyword indexing is whether Amazon search can return your product for a given phrase. If a product is indexed for "stainless steel water bottle", it is eligible to appear in those results. If it isn't, it won't show up for that search however well it sells.

Indexing is the first gate. It doesn't say where you will appear, only whether you can appear at all. Rank comes after it.

How products get indexed

Amazon builds its search index mainly from the text and data in a listing:

  • the title, bullet points, and description;
  • backend search terms, the hidden keyword field in Seller Central;
  • product attributes such as material, size, color, and target audience;
  • the category and item type.

Amazon may also connect a product to searches through shopper behavior, but you can't control that directly. What you can control is the text you give Amazon.

Why indexing gets lost

  • Someone edited the title or bullets and removed a phrase.
  • The backend search terms field went over its limit and part of it was ignored.
  • The listing was suppressed or changed category.
  • A variation was split from its family or merged into another.

That is why indexing problems often appear right after a listing edit.

How to check indexing

A common manual check is to search Amazon for the ASIN together with the keyword. If the product appears, it is very likely indexed for that phrase. It's a quick heuristic, not an official Amazon tool.

For ongoing checks, a rank tracker tells you more. If a product suddenly disappears from results for a phrase it used to rank for, look at listing changes first.

How AMZTarget shows indexing

AMZTarget separates two situations that are easy to confuse. "Not in search index" means Amazon has no results for the phrase at all, so there is nothing to rank in. A dash means the phrase has results, but your product wasn't found on the first search pages. Listing monitoring keeps a history of title and bullet edits, so you can match a lost position to the change that caused it.

FAQ

How long does indexing take after a listing edit?

Usually from a few hours to a few days. Amazon gives no fixed time, so check again the next day before editing further.

If a product is indexed, will it rank on page one?

Not necessarily. Indexing only makes it eligible. Position depends on relevance, sales, price, and availability.

Does repeating a keyword help indexing?

No. One mention is enough. Repeating words in the title or backend field wastes space and doesn't add relevance.
