What is an ASIN on Amazon?
Definition
The 10-character code Amazon assigns to every product in its catalog. One ASIN is one product detail page on a marketplace.
ASIN stands for Amazon Standard Identification Number. It is a 10-character mix of letters and digits, and most product ASINs start with B0, for example B0C1234XYZ. For books, the ASIN is usually the same as the ISBN-10.
Amazon creates an ASIN when a product is added to the catalog. Every seller who offers that product sells on the same ASIN and the same product detail page, so the ASIN identifies the product, not the seller.
Where to find an ASIN
- In the URL. The 10 characters after
/dp/in a product link are the ASIN:amazon.com/dp/B0C1234XYZ. - On the product page. Scroll to "Product information" or "Product details" and look for the ASIN line.
- In Seller Central. Inventory → Manage All Inventory lists the ASIN next to each of your SKUs.
ASIN vs SKU vs UPC
These three IDs are easy to mix up:
- UPC, EAN, or GTIN is a global barcode issued by GS1. Sellers usually need one to create a new product in the Amazon catalog.
- ASIN is Amazon's own catalog ID for the product page.
- SKU is a code the seller chooses for their own offer on that ASIN. Ten sellers on one ASIN have ten different SKUs.
ASINs across marketplaces
The same product can carry the same ASIN on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and other marketplaces, but the data behind it is separate on each one. Price, sellers, the Buy Box, keyword rank, and Best Sellers Rank all belong to a specific marketplace. That is why rank and listing tools ask for both the ASIN and the marketplace.
How AMZTarget uses the ASIN
In AMZTarget you add a product by its ASIN and marketplace. From then on, scheduled checks record keyword rank, price, sellers, the Buy Box owner, and listing changes for that ASIN. It works for any public ASIN, so you can follow competitors the same way as your own products. Each tracked ASIN uses one product slot on your plan.
FAQ
Can two products share one ASIN?
No. One catalog item should have one ASIN on a marketplace. Duplicate pages for the same product break Amazon's catalog rules and are usually merged.
Is an ASIN the same as an ISBN?
Only for books. A book's ASIN is normally its ISBN-10. Every other product gets an ASIN generated by Amazon.
Can I track a competitor's ASIN?
Yes. The ASIN, price, sellers, and search position of a listing are public, so you can monitor a competitor's ASIN without any access to their account.
