What is BSR (Best Sellers Rank) on Amazon?
Definition
A sales-based ranking of a product within its Amazon category, where 1 is the best seller. Amazon updates it hourly.
Best Sellers Rank, or BSR, shows how a product sells compared with other products in the same category. A BSR of 1 means the best seller in that category. The lower the number, the more the product sells.
You'll find BSR in the "Product information" section of a detail page. Many products show more than one number: a rank in a top-level category, such as Home & Kitchen, and one or more ranks in subcategories.
How BSR is calculated
Amazon says the Best Sellers calculation is based on its sales and is updated hourly, taking into account recent and historical sales. Amazon doesn't publish the exact formula. In practice, recent sales weigh more, so BSR reacts within hours to a sales spike or a stockout.
What BSR tells you, and what it doesn't
- It does: estimate sales speed and compare products inside one category. It's also a good way to see how a competitor is doing.
- It doesn't: measure search visibility for a keyword. A product can have a strong BSR while losing rank for an important phrase, for example when most sales come from ads or external traffic.
- Compare like with like: BSR 5,000 in a huge category and BSR 5,000 in a niche one mean very different sales. BSR is also specific to each marketplace.
Why BSR suddenly gets worse
A sharp drop usually has a concrete cause: the product went out of stock, lost the Buy Box, lost a keyword position, moved to another category, or a competitor ran a promotion. Seeing BSR next to price, Buy Box, and rank history helps pin down which one.
How AMZTarget tracks BSR
The AMZTarget product snapshot shows the current BSR together with price, stock, and reviews. Charts show how rank, price, and BSR changed over the dates you choose, keeping the real highs and lows of BSR. When the category of a listing changes, the change appears in monitoring history and can trigger an alert.
FAQ
What is a good BSR on Amazon?
It depends on the category. A top-1,000 rank in a big category usually means strong daily sales, while in a small subcategory the same number may mean only occasional orders.
Does BSR affect keyword rank?
Both reflect sales, so they often move together. BSR is a result to read, not a setting you can change directly.
Why does my product show several BSR numbers?
Amazon ranks the product in its main category and in the subcategories it belongs to. Each number compares it with a different set of products.
