What are parent and child ASINs on Amazon?

Definition

A parent ASIN groups the variations of one product, such as sizes or colors. Each variation is a child ASIN with its own price, stock, and offers.

When one product comes in several versions, such as sizes, colors, or pack counts, Amazon groups them into a variation family. The family has one parent ASIN and several child ASINs.

The parent ASIN is not for sale. It is a container that ties the family together and sets the variation theme, for example "Size" or "Color-Size". Each child ASIN is a real, buyable product with its own price, stock, offers, Buy Box, and Best Sellers Rank. On the product page, shoppers switch between children with the size and color selectors.

What variations share and what they don't

  • Shared: the product page layout, the variation selector, and usually the star rating and reviews shown for the family.
  • Separate per child: price, availability, sellers, the Buy Box owner, Best Sellers Rank, and often the title and images.

Because ratings are pooled, a good variation family helps new children. It also means that splitting a family, or having a wrong product merged into it, can change the rating shoppers see overnight.

Variations and keyword rank

Amazon search usually shows one card per variation family, and the child it displays can change from one search to the next. If you track rank only for one child, the product may look "not found" while a sibling is actually on page one.

AMZTarget handles this with a variations list. When you add a product, you can attach its child ASINs. Rank checks then record a position whenever any ASIN from that list appears in the organic results for the keyword.

Where to find the parent ASIN

Shoppers don't see the parent ASIN on the product page. Sellers see it for their own products in Seller Central, in the inventory view and in variation reports. The child ASIN is the one in the URL after /dp/ when a specific size or color is selected.

FAQ

Does a parent ASIN have a Best Sellers Rank?

No. Sales happen on child ASINs, so Best Sellers Rank belongs to the children. The rank you see on a product page is for the child that is currently selected.

Should I track the parent or a child ASIN?

Track the child ASIN that sells best and list the other children as its variations. That way a rank check counts the product as found no matter which child Amazon puts in the search card.

Why did my variation family change without my edits?

Other sellers and Amazon's catalog systems can contribute to variation data. Families get merged or split for catalog reasons, which is why it pays to monitor the listing for changes.
